But first, what is mahjong?

Mahjong is a tile-based game that originated in China over 200 years ago and has since spread worldwide with many cultural variations.

At its core, Mahjong is:

The Basics

  • Players: Usually 4 people (though 3-player versions exist).
  • Tiles: The game uses a special set of 144 tiles featuring Chinese characters and symbols (similar in role to playing cards). These tiles are divided into suits (Bams, Cracks, Dots), plus special tiles like Winds, Dragons, Flowers, and Jokers.
  • Objective: Players draw and discard tiles, aiming to form a complete hand (often 4 sets and 1 pair, like “melds” in rummy).

How It’s Played

  1. The tiles are shuffled and arranged into a “wall.”
  2. Players take turns drawing a tile and discarding one.
  3. Certain combinations allow players to “call” tiles discarded by others.
  4. The goal is to complete a winning hand before the others do.

Variations

  • Chinese Classical: Traditional rules, very strategic.
  • Hong Kong / Cantonese: Fast-paced and one of the most popular styles.
  • Japanese Riichi: Complex, adds betting and scoring twists.
  • American Mahjong: Uses special rulebooks and scorecards, often played socially in clubs.

Why People Play

  • It’s both social and strategic—part chance, part skill.
  • It involves memory, pattern recognition, and tactical decision-making.
  • Many enjoy it for its cultural traditions and to keep their mind sharp.

Mahjong is a fun social activity that also helps with cognitive engagement and connection. Stop by 803 Kingwood Street and check out a game or two!
