New Memory Makers Kits for Those Struggling with Dementia
As dementia progresses, it can become difficult for loved ones to know how to keep conversations going. Yet, connection remains a fundamental human need — one that continues throughout life. When we move past our own discomfort and adjust how we communicate (and perhaps add a touch of humor), we often discover new, meaningful ways to connect with those experiencing memory loss.
Music, for example, is a powerful way to spark joy and awaken memories at any stage of dementia. Even when words are lost, many people will tap their toes, hum, or sing along to a familiar tune. I once had the privilege of filming an elderly couple dancing together, just as they had every Saturday night for years. Though the wife no longer spoke due to advanced dementia, her body remembered the rhythm — a beautiful gift of connection for her husband.
The Lakes Area Memory Awareness Advocates (LAMAA) is excited to introduce Memory Makers Kits. These kits are designed to help caregivers and families connect through reminiscence, conversation, and storytelling. Each of the 10 themed kits — such as baking, child raising, gardening, fishing, hunting, and needlecraft — contains items meant to spark memories and encourage engagement.

Using the kit is simple: explore the items together and ask open-ended questions like, “Have you ever used something like this before?” or “What does this remind you of?” There’s no right or wrong way to use the kits — each experience is unique and personal.
These kits are in the lobby area and must be checked out at the front desk. LAMAA has also been kind enough to donate several dementia/Alzheimer’s-related books for caregivers to check out from our lending library. Big thanks to LAMAA for their support!
