What Are Sons of Norway?
If you’ve ever heard the name Sons of Norway and wondered what it’s all about, you’re not alone. Sons of Norway is an international cultural organization dedicated to celebrating, preserving, and sharing Norwegian heritage — and it’s much more than history lessons and ancestry charts. It’s about community, connection, traditions, and having fun together.
Founded in 1895, Sons of Norway began as a way for Norwegian immigrants in the United States to support one another and stay connected to their roots. Over time, it has grown into a vibrant organization with lodges (local chapters) across the U.S., Canada, and Norway. Today, members of all backgrounds are welcome — you don’t need to be Norwegian to join, just curious and interested in the culture.
Celebrating Culture & Traditions
Sons of Norway lodges host a wide variety of activities that bring Scandinavian culture to life, including:
-
Cultural presentations and storytelling
-
Traditional Norwegian food and baking events
-
Music, dancing, and holiday celebrations
-
Language learning opportunities
-
Genealogy and heritage programs
The Center has several great examples of activities that support the Sons of Norway desire to continue some of the “old ways.” The Center offers members and the public to experience rosemaling. Rosemaling is the decorative folk art of rural Norway that flourished in the 1700’s and 1800’s. Rosemaling (rose painting) could be found on walls, ceilings, and furniture throughout Norway in homes and churches.

The Center also has an active wood carving group: another skill that was popular in the Nordic culture.

Food, Fellowship & Festivities
Many of Sons of Norway’s community outreach efforts and group events center around food — a beloved part of Scandinavian culture and a wonderful way to bring people together. Throughout the year, they host popular gatherings such as the Scandinavian Market, Lutefisk Dinner, and Viking Fest, where community members can enjoy traditional dishes, cultural experiences, and lively fellowship.
These events not only celebrate heritage but also create welcoming spaces for families, friends, and neighbors to connect, learn, and have fun.
Building Community Connections
At its heart, Sons of Norway is about people. Members form friendships, share experiences, volunteer in their communities, and support one another. Much like The Brainerd Center, it creates a welcoming place where adults can stay socially active, continue learning, and feel a strong sense of belonging.
Many lodges partner with local organizations, participate in community events, and host gatherings that are open to the public — making it easy for newcomers to get involved and see what it’s all about.
Giving Back to the Community
The local Sons of Norway chapter is active throughout the community and committed to making a positive impact beyond its own membership. They have partnered with organizations such as Second Harvest Food Bank and the Crossing Arts Alliance, generously sharing their time, talent, and treasure to support food access, the arts, and community well-being. Their service reflects the organization’s strong values of generosity, connection, and community care.
More Than a Heritage Group
While honoring Norwegian roots is central to the organization, Sons of Norway also offers member benefits such as scholarships, cultural grants, travel opportunities, and even financial products. But for most people, the biggest benefit is simple: meaningful connection and shared experiences. Groups like Sons of Norway play an important role in keeping traditions alive while bringing people together across generations. They offer opportunities to learn, laugh, celebrate culture, and form friendships — all of which support healthy aging and strong communities. Whether you have Scandinavian roots or just enjoy discovering new cultures, Sons of Norway offers a welcoming door into history, heritage, and community spirit.
