More Than Activities: Why Community Matters as We Age
When people first hear about The Center, they often think of the visible things—bingo, fitness classes like Bone Builders or Chair Yoga, card games, educational programs like our monthly Lunch and Learn sessions, volunteer projects, and special events like the upcoming Senior Health and Wellness Week and the 2026 Ageless Expo.

Those things are certainly important.
But they aren’t our mission.
Our mission is people.
One of the greatest challenges facing older adults isn’t always a medical diagnosis or a physical limitation. Sometimes it’s something much quieter: loneliness.

It can happen gradually. Retirement means fewer daily interactions. Children move away. Friends pass on. Driving becomes more difficult. Before long, someone who once had a full social calendar may go days—or even weeks—without a meaningful conversation.
The effects of social isolation are real. Studies continue to show that loneliness can have a significant impact on both physical and mental health. It affects our hearts, our minds, our confidence, and even our overall quality of life.
That’s why places like The Center matter so much.
Every single day, over 200 people walk through our doors looking for different things. Some come for exercise or to hang out with familiar faces. Others come to learn something new. Many stop in for coffee or to volunteer. Some arrive because they recently retired and aren’t quite sure what comes next. We also have many visitors who are in a season of transition in their lives due to a death of a spouse, a concerning diagnosis, or are new to the community
We feel blessed to be able to watch people blossom and grow on a daily basis.
A new member nervously walks into the lobby and, within a few weeks, is laughing with people they’ve come to know. Volunteers who originally signed up to “help out” discover they receive just as much as they give. Members reconnect with old classmates, former coworkers, and neighbors they haven’t seen in years. Others simply find comfort in knowing there’s always someone ready to share a cup of coffee and a conversation.
That sense of belonging is incredibly powerful.
At The Center, we also believe that aging doesn’t mean slowing down—it means continuing to grow. Sometimes that looks like a competitive game of pool, and other times it looks like a quite game of chess or curling up with a book in our cozy lobby. A comment we frequently hear is, “I love coming here. It gets me out of the house!”
Our members are constantly learning new skills, exploring hobbies, giving back through volunteer service, attending educational programs, traveling together, mentoring others, and staying connected to what’s happening in our community.
We also work hard to connect our members with local organizations, healthcare providers, first responders, businesses, and nonprofits. Those partnerships strengthen our community while making valuable information and resources more accessible to the people who need them most.
Healthy aging isn’t just about eating well or exercising.
It’s about having people in your life.
It’s about feeling needed. And heard.
It’s about knowing your community still values your experience, your wisdom, and your contributions.
That’s what we strive to create every day.
Yes, we have activities.
Yes, we have events.
But what we’re really building is community.
Because no one should have to grow older alone.

And sometimes, all it takes to change someone’s life is a warm welcome, a cup of coffee, and someone who says, “We’re glad you’re here.” Or call from someone at The Center who just wants to make sure you are OK because you haven’t stopped by in a while.
That’s what The Center has always been about. And that’s what it will continue to be. 🙂
